The Oxford Round Table will hold an International Session on Public Schools, Democracy and Religious Fundamentalism during the dates of March 11 – March 15, 2012 at Harris Manchester College in the University of Oxford, Oxford, England. Harris Manchester College is one of the thirty-eight colleges that form the University of Oxford. 

Publication:

You are invited and encouraged to make a presentation and to provide a paper on a relevant aspect of the topic.  If you wish to present a paper, you should so indicate when you respond to this invitation. Thereafter, you will be requested to submit an abstract for review by the Programme Committee.  Papers presented at the Round Table may be subsequently submitted for publication in the Forum, a journal of the Oxford Round Table. Papers considered for publication in the Forum are evaluated by peer reviewers as to technical and substantive quality and for potential to make a significant contribution to new knowledge in the field. 

Facilitator:

The session will be facilitated by Canon Brian Mountford, Vicar of the historic University Church of St. Mary the Virgin of the University of Oxford.  Dr. Mountford is a Fellow of St. Hilda’s College in the University of Oxford.

Topics of particular concern of this Round Table arising under the general heading of Public Schools, Democracy and Religious Fundamentalism are the following:

  • Assessing the Religious Influence on Public Schools
  • Exploring the Effects of the Rise of Religious Fundamentalism on Public Schools

  • Nature of Charter Schools: Variety, Genus, and Kind
  • Curricular and Instructional Innovation: Benefits of Deregulation
  • Charter Schools, Values and Detriments
  • Compelled Tax Support of Clerical and Private Schools
  • Vouchers and School Reform in U.S., Canada, Europe, et al.
  • The Catholic Church and Public Schools
  • Student Performance of Charter and Voucher School Students
  • Separation of Church and State in the Schools of France
  • Methods of State Funding of Clerical Schools in the United Kingdom
  • Direct Support of Clerical Schools in Europe

Costs associated with the Round Table are borne by the invitee or the invitees institution or organization.  The Registration Fee of $1865 entitles the invitee to programme activities, Sunday registration, Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday lunches, Monday dinner, Sunday and Wednesday formal dinners, Sunday and Wednesday receptions and an annual on-line subscription to the Forum on Public Policy for you and your institution.

Lodging is also available in the Oxford College housing facilities at a rate of $215 per night.  Guests of participants are welcome, however, a separate fee of $700 is charged for their attendance.
